Memorial Bench To Be Built at NMRHOF

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs will be the site of an outdoor bench to honor the memory of entertainer David Cassidy and his contributions to the Thoroughbred industry. The cost of the bench is $2,500 and will be covered by donations from fans. Donations are tax deductible and every donor will be invited to the Museum Courtyard dedication scheduled for the end of April.
Cassidy, who became involved in racing as an owner/breeder, made efforts to ensure the protection of retired race horses and was involved in fundraising to benefit the cause.
Donations toward the bench, which can be made in memory of David Cassidy, can be contributed via phone by calling 518-584-0400, extension 100; via mail to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, 191 Union Ave., Saratoga Springs, NY, 12866; on Facebook with an accompanying phone call; or online at racingmuseum.org.

    • Hi Yvonne, How did you make a donation. What site did you go into. I would love to make a donation, it is indeed the greatest honour for David.

  1. I think it is a great idea and will be contributing myself. David Cassidy brought joy, happiness, and smiles to many of his fans thru his acting and his music. His music always uplifted me when I was having a bad day and things were not going well. My favorite song by him is “Cherish.” He made a difference in his fans lives like John Denver did if only for a small amount of time and should and will always be remembered by his fans. He will always be in his fan’s hearts. Even though he was a very famous person, he appeared to be a very humble and down to earth man who did not forget where he came from. I hope he is with God and Jesus now enjoying his new life!

  2. This is a beautiful tribute, I think Saratoga was a safe haven for DC. People respected him and his love of horses. Thank you to the Museum of Horseracing for such a nice and lasting tribute!

  3. David Cassidy loved the horse race track, this one I would say was his favorite. David also loved the horses, and he made lasting friendships, thank you racing association, you not only thought of David Cassidy, you highly gave his memory, a place that is special and the bench, will honor him for years to come. And in many years to come, someone new will ask, who was David Cassidy? ,why is there a bench in his name,? The answers will be many, what is important David Cassidy legacy is remembered and he will never be forgotten.

  4. This is a wonderful idea.
Thank you to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame for this tribute to David Cassidy

  5. Thank you to the National Museum of Racing for this honor for David. This is one of my favorite places to visit as I too am a life long racing fan. Maybe one day he may be inducted to the hall of fame for his contributions—I will be visiting this summer!!!

  6. It’s wonderful to read David made efforts towards the protection of retired racehorses. In an interview, David said at one point he owned 200 horses!! The bench at Saratoga Springs is a beautiful tribute to celebrate David’s long-time love affair with thoroughbred racehorses and his expertise in their breeding and training. I don’t know how he had the time to fit all this in alongside his musical career!

  7. I think this is a most wonderful idea. David had a life long love of horses. He owned, bred and cared about what happened to them. This will be a fitting memorial to him. I’m sure he would have loved this. Thank you to the National Museum of Racing, I have made a donation to the Memorial Bench in David’s name. Still mourning him, I feel a piece of me went with him, the most beautiful man in every way. Missing and loving him always.

  8. This is a beautiful and perfect way to remember David. My daughter years ago gave me a birthday card with David siting on a horse. The best picture of him that I will cherish always. I also, still feel the loss , he took a bit of all those who loved him with him to heaven. Thanks for that wonderful day we spent together years ago and I am so blessed to have had that. I met you halfway and that was better than no way. I will love and think of you always David .❤️

  9. I think it is a wonderful idea and I do hope it can be realized.
It surely is the best place to remember David Cassidy.

  10. Quite shocked that less than half of money required for the memorial bench has been donated. Please let this be a reality and not a pipe dream,David deserves this so much.

  11. Yvonne I agree, I’m in process with mine. David does deserve and he really would of liked this, please David Cassidy fans, let’s do this for David. He loved the horses, and he got to be himself and just enjoy the track, and be himself. And to his love for the horses, he looked after them with the kind caring heart he had, done so much charity. Let’s do this, up to us fans, wonderful we would be asked to be part of this special remembrance that will always be there for David Cassidy. I saw some pictures of David there, and he his with Beau, they have there program and they both look so cute and happy. And there are other pictures and David really looks happy there. at Saratoga Springs N.Y. racetrack.

  12. I’ve sent in my donation and hope others will follow, let’s do this for David, horses and Saratoga Springs were such a big part of his life and brought him so much joy, I think he would really love being remembered in this way.

  13. i contributed back on the 17th. Putting a link on Twitter might help?David Cassidy was the Frank Sinatra of my generation. Like Frank-he conveyed every word he sang and you felt like you were the recipient of his serenade. It feels good to give something back to him for something he loved-horses.

  14. i am questioning the price of the bench, before i make a donation, a memorial bench in the uk only costs £300, i feel $2500 is expensive, is there a reason for it.

  15. I thought they’d only just started raising money towards the bench and that it wouldn’t be done immediately. However, I liked the idea it was at Saratoga track where David had some escapist times, and that it was something people visiting the track could enjoy, sit down on, and remember David’s love of horses.

  16. Thank you Jane for your efforts to keep the memory of our beloved David so beautifully. He deserves all the honors. He made my life and that of all the fans much happier.

  17. I was organising to ring to make a donation tonight (checking time differences and international dialling codes), and found the following entry in Wikipedia:

“The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers.”

    What a nice co-incidence. 🙂

  18. I hope the bench for David Cassidy at the racetrack he was happy at , is in process, it’s just not a racetrack the place is so much more. What a nice honor to David Cassidy.

  19. I’m surprised, that there are not many responses , here about the bench for David Cassidy, it’s not how much you give, it is the thought and remembrance for David Cassidy, at a place he loved to be.

  20. the news is lovely that David`s bench has been paid for, so glad i donated and felt a part of this event, look forward to seeing a picture of his bench, a memory to be cherished always, and remembered for many years, when people sit and read his name.

  21. I am so happy to have donated and been a small part of this….a place where David loved….can’t wait to see posts of the bench…..all for the love of you David. Xx 💋😥💔💔

    • Hi Gwen

Did you get an acknowledgement from them?

I too have made a donation on behalf of my sister and myself, but have not received an acknowledgement.

There has been no response from emails sent or voicemail left for them.

      • Hi Gwen,

        Guess what?

I received the acknowledgement from Cathy Marino of NMRHOF, for my donation towards the David Cassidy benches YESTERDAY, (YES, on DC’s birthday!).

Do you think it is just a co-incidence? Or are other forces at work here?

  22. I am very happy this idea has been successful. Whoever thought of it, it is a wonderful way to remember the ‘horsey’ part of David’s life, along with all his other talents. It is also something practical people visiting Saratoga can use and enjoy. Hope to see what it looks like on this site, when it’s in place.

  23. Well done fans for helping in the purchase of a memorial bench for our beloved David. Saratoga springs a favourite spot of David’s and his beloved horses. I think David would have loved this. Looking forward also to seeing a picture of his bench. He lives on in our hearts and always will. Thank you NMRHOF and thank you, as always, Jane.

  24. I think this is fantastic. David loved horses.
I will definitely be donating to this.
I’m glad someone is going to honor his memory.
    God bless him

  25. Just learned of the bench. Is it too late to contribute towards it, as I have read it has been paid. Also for anyone questioning the cost, a bench was donated in memory of my brother at a dog park he volunteered his time and the cost was also approximately $ 2500.00.

  26. Hi Eileen, hope to see you there, I am going, this was a special place to David, be my first time, very considerate and nice honor for David Cassidy to have two benches in his memory. A part of David will always be there.

  27. I am pleased to announce that I finally was able to access the Saratoga Racing Museum. I have donated to the Memorial bench for David. They have collected all the funds needed. They will have a dedication May 20, 2018. This will not be a formal dedication, but access to the museum will be waived that day for anyone who has donated.

  28. I’m not in the US, but if I eventually get over there, I’d like to visit BB Kings in New York, see what New Jersey is like, then go up through New York State to Saratoga. These are places that I understand meant much to David, and though I’d never seen him perform or met him, it would be nice to see the places that were important in some way. I know that a lot of people will be meeting on May 20 for the “opening”, but I am hoping that if I can get there, I’m going to try for an April 12, someday, in Saratoga…..

  29. I’m so thrilled! I received my letter today!
Wow, the letter and postmark is dated a month ago. Pretty amazing it got here, as the address is incomplete and missing the words “England” or “United Kingdom”, but hey, it made it!
Pity I’m not able to get there on 20th May, but please God, I will someday….. maybe even with Lyn…. nothing’s impossible, right?

    • Exactly Deb! I’m keeping it there on my wish list, and if I can go some day, it would be really nice to meet up with other fans there as well. I’ll certainly be posting here if it looks like becoming a reality. It’s wonderful that you got your letter, though posted without your country name. I was really thrilled to get mine too. I am really pleased that a lot of people are able to attend on 20th May.

Also there’s something interesting that I read about the museum – and that is that is was founded in 1950. A nice bit of synchronicity I thought.

      • Hi Lyn
I’m all for happy “co-incidences”, or shall we say, God-incidences!
Its all on my prayers list, and I know if it is His Will, it will surely come to pass.

      • Not a particularly “lucky” person, but going to start playing the weekly lottery.
Aaah, IF I win I’d love to take a group of UK-based fans out to check those benches, and also pay our respects by remembering David in this place that was so special to him.

  30. I made it to Saratoga for Sunday May 20th. I met several lovely fans. The bench is in a serene and protected courtyard. I would like to contact the person I talked to in the parking lot, she and I talked for awhile she was (from Cleveland), she met up with another fan about 18 months ago and they traveled there together. Just before we were going to leave she got my attention and showed me a Saratoga Newspaper and proceeded to give me one, which I will cherish We said we would communicate thru this site. Here’s hoping you see this and contact me. “KERRY”
