Concert Reviews

Cache Creek, Brooks, CA

Friday, June 15th 2007.

We got up in the morning and finished packing. I had noticed that there was a vehicle sitting by the entrance way just below our window and then there was Frank Fabio, the bass player, walking toward the vehicle. Then came Teri Cote', the drummer, Sully Sullivan, lead guitar, and finally Rob, keyboards. They all were pulling there luggage along and gave it to Frank to load up the Tahoe that they were to drive up to Cachi Creek in Brooks.

Dorri decided to go and stand in the stairwell and see if David would be coming down that way as he was staying on the 7th floor and that would make sense for him to come down the stairs instead of the lobby which was a long walk around the Casino to get to the car. Well I guess Dorri got tired of waiting in the stairwell and came back to the room and then I looked outside the window and there he was. Standing by the car wearing black jeans and guess what a white polo shirt. The man must love black and white clothes. Even off stage he wears them.

Sully got into the back seat of the Tahoe first. Teri was in the middle and Rob on the other side. Frank was the driver. Then David got in the front and then they were off on an adventure as David put it at the concert that night. I video taped David getting into the Tahoe and them driving off to Brooks, California for that nights concert.

We finished packing and called for the bellhop to take our luggage down. I pulled my car around and Dorri had hers brought up from the Valet. We still had other problems with the hotel about the bill and a lot more things. Tachi Palace needs to work out the kinks. They have way too many problems with lack of communication within the hotel and each department.

So off we were to the next show. We stopped in Stockton at Dorri's house and then went and picked up her sister Shelley who would be going to her first David concert. A DC virgin. Was she in for a treat!

So off we are driving to this out of the way casino. Interstate 5 was fine but then you get on this back road Highway 16 which winds around here and there and goes up and down over these hills. There is nothing around but empty land, a farm here and there and oh yes a few cows. Well, I am use to farm country from growing up in Indiana, but I was not sure about Dorri as Highway 16 did a lot of turns and the signs were not posted to easily. We had to go down 23 miles on this road before we saw the Casino "that popped out of nowhere as if it was an Oasis." (That is almost a quote from David at the concert that night but that is getting ahead of the story.)

We unloaded the cars and checked in and went to the room and was ready to crash. But no time for that. "Lei" Joyce came up to our room and visited with up while we all got ready. We were finishing up when I got a call from a girl friend that asked me if she caught me heading to the concert. I said we were still getting ready and she said we better hurry as it was 30 minutes before the show. Well I was ready first so I headed down to the venue and got in line. I was seating in my seat which was fourth row to the right of the stage. The others came in one by one.

As I waited and looked around I recognized someone I had heard of but never met until then. It was Mark Wyckoff. Mark is a newspaper reporter and has written articles on David and others. Very talented man. He was standing in front of me and I asked him if that was his name and he said it was. So I got up and we stood on the side and talked. He bought a lot of things of David's at the auction. Mark is also an avid collector of the Cassidy family. We had a great talk and exchanged emails and then went to our seats. David was about to come out as the band was coming out on stage.

David came out in his usual attire. White shirt and black jeans and black shoes. He seemed very happy to be there and really was up in spirits. He joked about taking forever to get to the Casino and how it was that the Casino "Popped out of nowhere as if it was an Oasis." Exact words escape me as it has been a while since he said it. (Most things I can still remember but exact is not one.) He joked about taking 7 1/2 hours to get there. Mind you Dorri and I drove the same route (or at least we thought we did) and we arrived in 5 hours. Seems they took the scenic route of going near San Francisco/Oakland and did not stay on Interstate 5 as we did. The only thing I could think of was that they were driving in the fast lane and could not get over to the far right lane in time to stay on Interstate 5 and that would explain the long drive to the Casino. David joked about that when they got there that he "went up to the room and took a shower and that some people just had to do a sound check and still had not taken a shower." The audience made a sound of ewe as if they could smell the band from where they were. LOL! David sang a variety of songs and goofed off too when he sang solo (no music) "You Made Me So Very Happy" and joked with the band about knowing all the songs that David could come up with. I had yelled out Junked Heart Blues and Frank heard me and shook his head no and asked if I had it and I said of course and he motioned like give it to me. I think I will give him a copy in Orlando. Dorri did video tape his rendition of "You Made Me So Very Happy" and I think it is on her MySpace.

Song list:
HUSH
I CAN FEEL YOUR HEARTBEAT
POINT ME IN THE DIRECTION OF ALBUQUERQUE
ECHO VALLEY 2-6809
SUMMER DAYS
CROSSROADS
NO REPLY
HEY YOU GOT TO HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY
BLACKBIRD (He got mad at himself and the guitar jokingly as he could not do the song anymore no matter how hard he tried.)
AIN'T NO SUNSHINE
COMMON THIEF
CHERISH (RE-MIX)
BAND INTRO/COM'ON GET HAPPY
I THINK I LOVE YOU
CRY (ENCORE)

All in all the show is always too short. He could sing or talk all night long and I would enjoy it. But I think if he did that he would not have a voice anymore. I had a great time and would travel all that way again and I would drive. The country side is so beautiful.
