UNSWEPT easily defeated a field of state-bred three year-olds in a NW-2X condition allowance at Aqueduct Racetrack. The manner, in which he romped against the quality field, which included Infinite Justice, a 7-length winner of this past year's New York Futurity, suggests he will be a force to be reckoned with in the Big Apple Triple series, a three-race series for registered New York-bred three year-olds.
Unswept was coming off a third-place finish in the open Fred "Cappy" Capossela Handicap and was part of the Gary Contessa entry along with stable-mate Beyond Chance. The race was run over the inner track at six-furlongs on a refreshingly warm and sunny afternoon in the metropolitan New York City area.
Jockey Aaron Gryder gunned Unswept to the lead and set some quick fractions of 22.4 and 46 flat to the half-mile pole. Unpressured throughout, Unswept glided through the stretch in a hand-ride and coasted under the wire by four-lengths, stopping the timer in a rapid 1:10.3 - fastest race of the five races run at six-furlongs.
Owned by television and singing star David Cassidy in partnership with Richard Brodie's Andrew Farm, Unswept was purchased by Cassidy for $117,000 at the 2001 Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Preferred Sale. Cassidy, a longtime supporter of the New York Breeding and Racing Program, is, also, an active breeder in New York. Unswept has now earned $103,903 in six lifetime starts, including three victories.
Unswept's breeders, Dr. Jerry Bilinski of Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, Martin Zaretsky of Old Chatham, and Marc Roberts, jointly qualified for a $2,700 breeder award. Bilinski purchased Unswept's dam, four-time winner Dress, for $27,000 at the 1999 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October mixed sale in Florida when she was carrying Unswept, who is by deceased End Sweep.
