Keith wants to have freedom. Shirley answers ‘no’, anytime he asks. Even when Keith finds out that a neighbor, Mr Jarvis, has a low rent room in exchange for light gardening. Reuben Kincaid, The Partridge Family’s manager is concerned that Keith so far hasn’t written any new songs for the upcoming album, He talks with Shirley that maybe an own apartment for Keith it’s not such a bad idea. Shirley thinks her oldest son is not responsible enough to take care of himself, she is also sad he wants to leave the family, but in the end she agrees. After all, he will live just next door.

Keith is a little disappointed that family is not sorry that he is leaving. He likes his bachelor room, but it turns out that ‘a light gardening’ takes him a few hours a day. He doesn’t have time for writing songs nor his homework. He is so busy that he has to pay for Danny’s help, who takes advantage of the situation. Danny brings Keith food and his ironed clothes, for a fee.

Keith has a date with a cheerleader from collage, so he goes to the Partridge’s house for a record player and an album of Bolero. Danny is very curious about why Keith needs such music for a date. Keith tells Shirley that he is going to work very hard on writing a new song. Vicky, a cheerleader arrives and, at the same time, Shirley is concerned that her son is working so hard and that he’s probably hungry. Shirley prepares food for him and goes to Mr Jarvis’ house. Danny manages to warn Keith at the very last moment, and he hides Vicky. Of course, Shirley guesses everything but says nothing. When his mother leaves, Keith frees Vicky, but suddenly someone knocks on his door. Some unexpected guests, Vicky’s friends, and the party starts. A very disappointed Keith leaves his guests and goes to the Partridges’ house to talk with his mother. He admits that it is not easy to live on his own, and Shirley tells him that she has a free room to let.
