The Partridge Family - Season 2, Episode 24 (49)

Title: Who Is Max Ledbetter And Why Is He Saying All Those Horrible Things?

First aired: March 17, 1972

Synopsis:

It's Tracy's birthday. Reuben hires Max Ledbetter, a retired show business psychic as a surprise birthday present for Tracy. Some of the family just think Max's performance is another act, but Keith is impressed and asks Max for a prediction about his upcoming basketball game.

When the prediction comes true, Danny decides to take advantage and use Max's powers by getting some investment tips. Danny rings Max to ask him to make a prediction about the stock market, as Danny would like to invest in it.

Max has a problem of his own, he owns a bakery and he will lose it unless he can pay off the bank note, he desperately needs an additional $156.00 to make the bank payment by Friday.

Danny and Keith visit Max the next day and tell Max they want an investment. Max goes into his "trance" state and tells the boys that something will happen to their family unless they can have $156.00 in his hands by Friday, which happens to be the day of the next Partridge Family concert.

Danny and Keith try everything to get the money, including a kissing booth. They even try asking everyone, Reuben included, for a loan, without telling them why. When everything fails, they pretend, unsuccessfully to be sick, hoping to avoid the predicted disaster by not showing up to the concert.

Finally, Shirley works it out and finds out the reason for their strange behaviour. When Shirley confronts Max, he admits that he's a fraud and he only wanted to borrow money to save his bakery. Shirley and the kids decide to help him by getting him on the bill with them to play their next concert.
