The Partridge Family - Season 3, Episode 14 (63)

Title: Aspirin At 7, Dinner At 8

First aired: January 5, 1973

Synopsis:
Danny has a temperature, so Shirley calls a doctor. A new paediatrician, Dr Bernie Applebaum, arrives. He once had a date with Shirley and is very happy to see the Partridges again. Danny’s illness is not very serious, just a 24 hour virus, and the doctor uses the opportunity to ask Shirley for dinner. She is not very enthusiastic about it. Although Bernie is a kind and nice man, he is also very boring.

In the evening, at the restaurant, he tells Shirley about his medical studies and orders food for her. Only the healthy kind, without fat, cholesterol and salt, so she returns home rather hungry. The doctor is very persistent and in spite of herself Shirley goes for another date with him. This time he takes her on a tour around the hospital he works in. Shirley doesn’t know how to end this acquaintance, so she asks Laurie for advice. She feels that she really needs to do something because Dr Applebaum starts being very serious. He sends her flowers, and an article appears in a local newspaper that Dr Applebaum is dating Shirley Partridge.

When Bernie’s mother reads it, she comes to San Pueblo to meet the future daughter-in-law. She is certain that her son and Shirley will marry. The kids who so far had made fun of mom and her unexpected admirer, also see that something needs to be done.

Shirley realises that she should talk with the doctor and explain the situation. After the concert she meets with Bernie at the dressing room. But before she tells him about her real feelings it turns out that Bernie wants to say something too, and surprises Shirley by admitting that he is not ready for marriage and responsibility. She is astonished, after all it’s not nice to be dumped, but of course she is happy that everything ends that way.
