The Partridge Family – Season 3, Episode 21 (70)

Title: Forgive Us Our Debts.

First aired: March 2, 1973

Synopsis:

Danny waits impatiently for the mail as he is expecting to get some money but to his disappointment, there is only a bill to pay for Shirley. She bought a cuckoo clock at Bartlett’s, the local department store. But instead of the expected $29 there is $290 to pay. Shirley goes to the department store to clear up this obvious error. She meets with a credit manager, Mr Atwater who informs her that all the data is on a new computer, called 1984Z. He is very proud that they can offer customers computerized forms of statements. Of course, he is sorry because of the error. He shows Shirley the computer and introduces her to a young man who operated 1984Z, Tom Baker. Tom enters the correct data, and Shirley thinks it closes the case.

However, the next day Shirley gets another bill, this time for $2900. She is really angry so she decides to go to the department store again and close her account. This time Laurie is with her mother, and Tom Baker is very happy when he is introduced to her. Laurie is very pretty, and he is also a great fan of The Partridge Family. Mr Atwater apologies for the wrong bill again.

It’s really scary when a collector comes for Shirley’s debt which is now even bigger, and obviously the word has been spread that her credit is not good. This time Shirley goes to see the owner of the store, Mr Gordon himself. He is very sorry that it all happened, and that he is losing such a good customer. While Shirly is talking with him, a demonstration organized by Laurie and her friends against replacing people with computers, is going on in front of the store. Mr Gordon pleads for an end to the demonstration and promises Shirley everything will be explained.

However, when they return home, the living room is empty because the furniture has been seized by the collection agency and also their fee from their last concert.

Keith, Laurie and Danny organize a special operation and they sneak some false data into the computer. The next day Shirley received a check from the department store for $50,000! Mr Atwater appears at the Partridge’s house very quickly and explains that the check is another computer mistake. Of course, Shirley doesn’t want that money but it’s a nice opportunity to tease him a little bit. She also guesses that her kids have something to do with the latest computer’s error.
