The Partridge Family - Season 3, Episode 6 (55)

Title: You're Only Young Twice

First aired: October 20, 1972

Synopsis:

It’s quite late and the kids are going upstairs when the phone rings. It’s Mrs Kennedy, Danny’s school teacher, who asks about the note Danny was given at school. He hasn’t said anything about it and it seems this is something serious because the next day Shirley has to meet with a school psychologist, Dr. Beecher.

Dr. Beecher tells Shirley about Danny’s behaviour in class, that he talks too much and generally tries to attract attention. According to her the problem is that he is a middle child. Dr. Beecher has a proposition, a kind of experiment. She suggests that letting Danny do what he wants for a while will be a solution. Doing this will let them find out what is bothering him. Shirley agrees to try.

The other kids expected Danny to be punished, so they are astonished when he can watch TV instead of doing his homework. When Shirley explains to Keith and Laurie about the experiment, they don’t think it’s a good idea, and wonder whether Danny will like it. Danny’s behaviour makes life difficult for everyone. He spoils Laurie’s date, and he wakes up Keith at 1am just to invite him to watch a movie together.

Tired and worried, Shirley goes to Dr. Beecher again. The school psychologist acknowledges that it was a difficult time for the whole family but she now knows what bothers Danny. He wants to identify with the big kids, Keith and Laurie, and he wants to be an adult. Danny enjoys being treated as an adult but he needs to understand that being an adult also means responsibility.

Shirley asks Keith and Laurie to include Danny in everything they do. The double date with Keith is very boring for Danny and the girl he has invited, 11-year-old Gloria. He tells Shirley that adults are very boring, and he prefers to be a kid.
