The Partridge Family - Season 3, Episode 8 (57)

Title: A Likely Candidate

First aired: November 3, 1972

Synopsis:

Laurie drags new voter Keith to a rally for Richard Lawrence, Congressional candidate for the 39th precinct. Keith is so impressed with Richard that he volunteers to help with Richard’s campaign.

Richard comes to the Partridge’s house to speak to Keith and ask if the Partridge Family could perform at his campaign rally. Shirley says they never accept a date until she can speak to Reuben who is out of town. She also voted for Bob Antonelli, Richard’s opponent, and she doesn’t know what Richard’s views on the issues are. Richard invites Shirley to dinner where they can discuss the issues.

After a breakfast where Shirley is humming a love song, Keith becomes concerned when he overhears Shirley on the phone with Richard. She calls him “Richard” and not “Mr. Lawrence.” He tells Danny, “I bet if she calls him Dick, we won’t get any breakfast.”

Shirley breezes into the kitchen and announces she’s “meeting Dick for coffee.” Keith is even more worried. Danny thinks Keith is paranoid.

While at the campaign headquarters, Shirley admits she cannot reach Reuben and has decided to perform at Richard’s campaign rally without being paid for it. Richard is ecstatic and treats Shirley, Keith, and Cathy, his daughter, to dinner.

After the dinner date, Keith confesses to Shirley that he was keeping a protective eye on her. Shirley explains to Keith that she will always be his mother. But as a woman, she gets lonely, and she really likes Richard.

The Partridges perform “One Day at a Time” at the rally. Shirley also sings “Ain’t Love Easy.” Unfortunately, Richard loses the election. However, Richard is consoled because if he had won, he would have to live in Washington D.C. He tells Shirley that San Francisco is a lot closer.
