On-line Chats with David Cassidy

Chat Transcript - April 1999

This is the first online chat David did. It was held in April 1999. Fans were very thrilled and some took time off work to be there with the hope that their questions might get answered or just to be there with him. The chatroom was filled to capacity. Some got in hours ahead to secure a place.

host-Katarina-Chatas : Hello everyone and welcome to tonight's Vegas.com Live! I am your host, Katarina Chatis. Joining me in the studio tonight are my sassy and hip producers extraordinaire Cid Ceasar, and our zany and fabulously fast typist, Vic Vega.

We have a very special guest for you today, David Cassidy! Welcome to the show, David. Let's jump right in and get started.

Guest-David Cassidy : Hi! (Handshake)

host-Cid Question from Laura63 : I understand that you are planning a tour, when and where?

Guest-David Cassidy : It is set for June beginning on the 15th somewhere in the Minneapolis area, I believe. The 17th Baltimore, 18th Philly, 19th Town Hall Theater, NYC .... 20th Boston... 22nd Buffalo, 23rd Cleveland, 26th Ceasar's Tahoe.

host-Katarina_Chatas : That's quite a schedule you've got there.

Guest-David Cassidy : That's just the first leg of it. I will have more definitive details in the next week .. meaning the venues themselves. I know what they are, but we haven't signed deals on them. More info will be available on my website www.davidcassidy.com in about a week.

host-Katarina_Chatas : That's easy to remember, that's quite a score.

Guest-David Cassidy : All of the info regarding the tour, upcoming stuff, albums, etc. are available there.

host-Katarina_Chatas : OK, great.

host-Cid Question from Muscvixen : David, I have followed your career through the years. I love the new CD. What's next after the touring for this CD?

Guest-David Cassidy : I guess ... Hmmm .... I have met with two different properties here. And, I've been speaking to them about putting a permanent show in Las Vegas when the timing is right for me and for them. I'm still about only 80% healed from my foot surgery. So, I've had to proceed with some caution about my future plans and I have to be aware that I can't go full-boar as I have the past ten years working ten shows a week. I am trying to put more balance into my life with my family. And, the work ... I'm also producing a show entitled "The Rat Pack is Back." An opening in Las Vegas .. around the Memorial Day weekend ... to run for a couple of months in the summer. Again, no papers have been signed with the property so I can't officially announce it.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Ok, we'll be hovering around your website for that information.

Guest-David Cassidy : All of that will be available within 10 days .. the deal has to be signed within 10 days or else we're going to go to another property.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Well there you go. Good luck with that.

Guest-David Cassidy : yeah, it's going to be great.

host-Cid Question from docmic : David, as a pediatrician, I enjoy and celebrate the wonders of children every day. What do you find so special about children?

Guest-David Cassidy : Honesty, spontaneity, their ability to focus on the immediate. The immediate sensation ... And that their life has to revolve around fun. (Wink)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Fun, fun is good.

Guest-David Cassidy : Fun is very good. Fun is good.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Kids know how to have fun, I can say that ...

Guest-David Cassidy : Yeah, I mean, I could go on and on but that's the essence of it.

host-Cid Question from CherylC_1 : DAVID-- Will you include THE LADY IS A TRAMP in your concert reprotiore? What will you include?

host-Katarina_Chatas : Or is that a secret?

Guest-David Cassidy: Possibly. I would say I would love to include that and an awful lot of the stuff I recorded that no one has ever heard because it's unfinished along with "Mack the Knife," some new big band stuff ... new songs that were written about 3 years ago with a big band theme. I don't know whether or not in this particular tour I can carry that many horn players with me. And, whether or not I can incorporate that with my past material as well as my new material.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Mm hmmm.

Guest-David Cassidy : So, I believe that that's going to be a specific tour ... and one that I have every intention of doing live.

host-Katarina_Chatas : For those of you who are just joining us, we're chatting with David Cassidy. Feel free to submit all your questions and comments by clicking on the "something to say" icon at the bottom right corner of your screen. And, enjoy!

host-Cid Question from Lori__OTND : Your new single, Sheltered in Your Arms, is very moving and you have said it's very special to you .. is there a story behind it?

Guest-David Cassidy : There's a story behind every song that I write. But, it oftentimes, is not specifically about an event that is literal. Often I will disguise my ..... I will disguise myself by switching roles or taking another point of view. Perhaps, the other person's point of view and writing from that angle.

host-Katarina_Chatas : You're very ...

Guest-David Cassidy : "Sheltered..." is a song that is actually a half of one relationship and a half of another relationship. And, inspired by both. To create the whole story.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Mm hmm.

Guest-David Cassidy : And thank you for that question! I'm pleased that you llike the single. I look forward to singing it to you. (Love)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Wow. That's very cool. I bet Lori never heard you say that before! (Smile)

Guest-David Cassidy : I don't know who she is, but God Bless her!

host-Cid Question from richk13 : David what was it like being so young and famous growing up? Did you have the same kind of pressures as normal kids had?

Guest-David Cassidy : Yes, I suppose I had the same kind of pressures normal kids have. However, it changed quite dramatically at 18 or 19 years old ... which is when I became a professional and then became extremely famous. And, I think that that ... I mean it happened the way it happened for me ... created multiple level problems for me. Both personally, emotionally, AND professionally. As I've only lived this life, I can't know what other people in their growing up is or was. So, I only have this to reference. But, I have been told mine was quite extraordinary.

host-Katarina_Chatas ; It certainly seems that way.

Guest-David Cassidy : Cool! (Smile)

host-Katarina_Chatas : The question was : I was a fan for 28 years and am now a psychologist, I love the new CD, very bluesy.

Guest-David Cassidy : Well, as you are a psychologist, perhaps you can help me with this problem.

Guest-David Cassidy : Cool! (Smile) I'm twisted, demented, neurotic, psychotic, and have a jones for chocolate frozen yogurt. What do I do with this problem?

Guest-David Cassidy : Just kidding! (LOL)

host-Katarina_Chatas : You sound very compelling to me, David. And I love chocolate yogurt!

Guest-David Cassidy : Well, thank you. (LOL)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Happy girl : David, please comment on your favorite song on the new album and the reason.

Guest-David Cassidy : I don't have a favorite song on the album. I suppose it's because I like all of them and, I think it's the first album I've ever made that I've actually liked all the songs on it. So, I'm gonna do a good bit of it live in June. That's about it.

host-Katarina_Chatas : bcingyasoon : After all the years in show business and all the different experiences you have had, can you say you are happy with the life you have today?

Guest-David Cassidy: Well, (sighs) my dear ....

Guest-David Cassidy : As you've come to ask Father Time that intriguing question .... The answer is yes with an asterisk, meaning I'm working on it constantly on a daily basis. And, in words of those four lads from Liverpool, "It's gettin' better all the time..."

host-Katarina_Chatas : Well said. (Smile)

Guest-David Cassidy : (Smile)

host-Katarina_Chatas : This is from MsSun, how old were you when you started on the Partridge Family?

Guest-David Cassidy : I believe I was 4 ½

Guest-David Cassidy : Emotionally.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Wow, early, very early. Ah.

Guest David Cassidy : My chronological age was 19.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Where can I purchase "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat"?

Guest-David Cassidy : Call Donny Osmond. I think he has a website.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Sandy4 - Do you miss being a teen idol?

Guest-David Cassidy : Are you kidding? Are you joking? (LOL)

host-Katarina_Chatas : (LOL)

Guest-David Cassidy : Have you lost your mind? Have you not read 80 gazillion pages and seen 100,000 interviews that I've done trying to go through the metamorphosis which I, unfortunately, went through. I'm not kidding. I think that there are aspects of youth and of having such a gifted, twisted youth that I suppose I'd have to, in my heart of hearts, say I missed.

Guest-David Cassidy : But, I don't think it'd be any different than anyone else reflecting upon their friends, moments, relationships, etc.. But, it really had nothing to do with being a teen idol. It had to do with being a human being.

host-Katarina_Chatas : This is a question from Lori, you're amazing in EFX, are you still planning on doing another show in Vegas?

Guest-David Cassidy : If this is the same Lori, I hope so. Not that I know who Lori is.

Guest-David Cassidy : Yes, I want to. I'm hoping I can make a commitment to doing as much work as they want me to make .... or they want me to do. At some point, I will know how much actual pounding, dancing, flying, and jumping, walking, running, etc., that my foot can handle. I hope within the next 30-60 days I'll have that answer. It's been about 10 weeks now since my surgery.

Guest-David Cassidy : Which, for those of you out there who don't know, is called "Morgan's Neuroma" I believe. Very painful. I don't recommend it.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Kids, don't try this at home. Gosh, bless your heart. So it was 10 weeks ago?

Guest-David Cassidy : Yeah, just about ten weeks, nine weeks something like that.

host-Katarina_Chatas : How's your recovery.

Guest-David Cassidy : I'm about 80% now, somewhere.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Congratulations.

Guest-David Cassidy : Yeah, thanks. (Smile)

host-Katarina_Chatas : JSBella - Tell us one moment you will never forget from your life.

Guest-David Cassidy : That's an easy one! The moment my son, Beau, was born. (Love)

host-Katarina_Chatas : That's a pretty important moment.

Guest-David Cassidy : It's a big moment!

host-Katarina_Chatas : Now, were you there?

Guest-David Cassidy : Oh yeah! Oh yeah ... I was there.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Wow, you got to witness the birth of life.

Guest-David Cassidy : Mm hmm ... yep. (yes)

host-Katarina_Chatas : This is a question from Pillarnos2:

Guest-David Cassidy : Whatever the hell these names are .. my God! (LOL)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Hi David, where do you see yourself in 10 years, if you can describe yourself in one word what would it be?

Guest-David Cassidy : In ten years ... (chuckles) .... back in the womb.

host-Katarina_Chatas : (LOL)

host-Katarina_Chatas : This is a question from Amy from Boston - when you were on TNN, Beau was singing every word of a song ... what are his musical interests.

Guest-David Cassidy : Good question! He likes the drums. He's taking piano lessons. And, he likes singing to early Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 stuff ... something Dad has suggested he might enjoy.

Guest-David Cassidy : And, he has a great ear. Which is good. He seems to have a really, very appealing voice. Obviously, the talents he got from his mother. (Smile)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Hardy har-har (Smile)

Guest-David Cassidy: So, I think he has a highly tuned musical interest .. for obvious reasons. I'm actually being serious. He loves to sing as I did ... he's very much like me in that he is singing during the course of the day to himself a lot. As I used to do. Before they put me in the home.

host-Katarina_Chatas : (Smile)

Guest-David Cassidy : (wink)

host-Katarina_Chatas : dionami - will you be coming back over to England at any time?

Guest-David Cassidy : I certainly hope so! Damn! I miss it there. The British weather ... you just can't beat it.

host-Katarina_Chatas : (LOL)

Guest David Cassidy : Seriously, I don't know whether or not I'm going to have any time to travel ... tour outside of America, but I miss my English fans and they've been always so incredibly supportive. And considering how long I've been away over the past three decades ... or is it? yeah. Three.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Well, speaking of your UK fans, here's one from AlicefromUK - Do you ever look at the website dedicated to you? I have the only David Cassidy fan website on the web.

Guest-David Cassidy : Thank you, Alice. (Smile)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Wow, what a fan!

Guest-David Cassidy : The problem becomes .... when you agree to accept the responsibility of checking your email, you never can let go of that responsibility. My life is so full with responsibility and work that I have to fight for every free moment each day to spend with my family. Consequently, I can't invest any time in internet-related websites, etc. as I was a couple of years ago impersonated by an obviously disturbed individual. It has made it virtually impossible for me to enjoy the fruits of your well-intended efforts. And, for that I'm truly sorry. Just know that your support and dedication is more than appreciated. And, I wish I could spend time one-on-one with each and every one of you. I think I'm a lot more comfortable with that.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Great answer.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Brightspear - David do you find it amazing that in the society we live in we are inclined to have our role models in music who are filled with drugs, etc...

Guest-David Cassidy : Well, now THERE'S a fascinating question! Yeah. I suppose we'd have to say the answer is yes. It is quite amazing. However, if we look beyond the surface, the reason we are viewing certain individuals as role models is perhaps, because they tend to create a sense of security or perhaps because ...

Guest-David Cassidy : ... they allow us to imagine what we might be if we could be them. It's a fascinating concept. I suspect that the music evokes a certain emotional response, which we tend to associate with a particular person. Or, artist. And, at which point they become the extension of that emotional response.

Guest-David Cassidy : .. And I know for me, having been faced with a question, on numerous occasions, "What is it like to be a role model, etc.?" I felt quite a great responsibility in not letting my fans down as well as trying to live up to their expectations of what I was. Terribly difficult. And, ultimately no one can succeed. So, I chose to not view myself as any kind of role model, but merely as a flawed, but basically good, decent human. Who tried to hide his imperfection and fragility....weaknesses, faults, etc, etc from the world for fear they wouldn't love him anymore.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Mmmm. But they do love you David.

Guest-David Cassidy : Therein lies the complexity of being a teen idol/role model when you care too much about your fans and their own emotions.

host-Katarina_Chatas : Right. David it was SO great having you on the show today! Thank you for joining us!

Guest-David Cassidy : Thanks for all the questions in there! They were really quite interesting and fascinating. My pleasure! (Handshake)

host-Katarina_Chatas : Well you are very welcome, thank you very much for participating and talking to all your fans. (OK)

Guest-David Cassidy : If I can just say goodbye with a kiss and tell them how much I miss them and hope to be back out singing and playing and doing what I do. (Love)

host-Katarina_Chatas : We look forward to seeing you.

Guest-David Cassidy : One of the few things, at least, I do very well.

host-Katarina_Chatas : And, thanks to all of your chatters out there! Please be sure to check the Excite Special Event Chat schedule for the next show!

Guest-David Cassidy : Okay!

host-Katarina_Chatas : Thanks for joining us everyone. Have a great week. Tdloo!

Guest-David Cassidy : Thank you! Adios!! (wave)
