In Belmont's second Sunday maiden special for New York-breds -- this one at 7-1/2 furlongs for fillies and mares, three-year-olds and up -- Ted Taylor's SUMMER IN SARATOGA broke from the outside post among seven starters and advanced from last to first on the outside as the 18.40-to-1 fifth choice. The three-year-old filly was race-ridden for the first time by pickup jockey Fernando Jara and increased her earnings by $24,600 to $43,025 while improving her record to 1 - 1 - 2 in nine starts, with all of her on-the-board efforts having come since March of this year. Summer in Saratoga had placed second at Aqueduct on April 24 and third in Belmont mud 22 days prior to Sunday's victory, after which New York Thoroughbred Breeders (NYTB) 2004 Trainer of the Year Gary Contessa had given her a moderate five-furlong Aqueduct workout on June 21. The bay filly's owner, Ted Taylor of Birmingham, Alabama, is an NYTB member and had purchased Summer in Saratoga for $34,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's 2004 May sale of two-year-olds in training in Timonium, Maryland. Summer in Saratoga was bred by television and singing star David Cassidy, who qualified for a $2,460 breeder award and whose addresses include Saratoga Springs. She is by Preakness winner and Eclipse Champion sire Summer Squall and is the second New York-bred winner that Cassidy has bred from winner Time for Saratoga, who is by Saratoga Six and is a half-sister to stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Lucky Touch ($258,776). Cassidy had purchased Time for Saratoga for $8,000 at Barretts Equine Limited's 1999 October sale of horses of all ages in California when she was carrying her second foal and first winner, who turned out to be New York-bred five-time winning router Toga's Triumph. Summer in Saratoga is inbred 4 x 5 x 5 to Bold Ruler, with Time for Saratoga being inbred 4 x 4 to that eight-time leading sire.
