NBC has picked up Jeff Rake's script for a contemporary version of The Partridge Family.

The original show, which followed a mother and her five children as they start a music career, starred David Cassidy and ran from 1970 to 1974 on ABC.

Rake told The Hollywood Reporter that he intended to turn the show's concept on its head: "In the original, the kids actually recruited their mum to front the band, which I can't see happening in any family on this planet.

"The new version will reflect what seems to me to be the more realistic family band scenario these days: a struggling, sort of well-meaning mum pimping her kids in order to create a wholesome-slash-sexy cash cow."

Rake has also sold an untitled action dramedy - about a Pentagon scientist who puts his inventions to good use - to Fox, with Arrested Development's Mitch Hurwitz and Anthony and Joe Russo on board to produce and direct respectively.
