The doctor is in ... jail? That's where Craig J belongs, David Cassidy said earlier this month after watching his new keyboardist rip through a wicked, off-the-cuff solo in Las Vegas. Cassidy gives his musicians a solo spot at each concert, and in Vegas Craig J lived up to his Doc Goldfingers nickname, pounding out a rocking solo that was drenched in both Gershwin and Chopin.

"His solo was off the freakin' hook," Cassidy told The Star. "I called him the next morning and I said, 'You need to be arrested. You need to go to prison. You need to be taken off this Earth, because nobody has ever, ever played s--- like you play.'"

Joining Cassidy's band has been a cool outlet for the Chicago musician, who has produced and arranged more than 20 No. 1 dance remixes for such artists as Mariah Carey ("Don't Forget About Us"), Kelly Clarkson ("Walk Away"), Beyoncé ("Irreplaceable"), Depeche Mode ("Perfect"), Pet Shop Boys ("Did You See Me Comin'") and Lily Allen ("F--- You"). He's also heavily involved in composing and licensing music for television, film and commercials through his Emoto Music company and Uncommon Trax label.

Craig J, who got to know Cassidy when they worked together on a remix CD three years ago, will be manning the keys when Cassidy performs at 9 p.m. Friday, July 30, at The Canyon, 28912 Roadside Drive, Agoura Hills. Expect a mix of Cassidy solo hits ("Cherish"), covers ("Crossroads," "Cry") and Partridge Family classics ("I Can Feel Your Heartbeat," "Echo Valley 2-6809," "I Think I Love You"). Tickets are $48.50. Call 818-879-5016 or visit http://www.canyonclub.net. Cassidy's website is http://www.davidcassidy.com; Craig J's website is http://www.craigj.com.
